START Competition 2025 Opens with New Website Launch

The START Logo

The START Competition, a free initiative for Primary School Students, developed by the HRB-Trials Methodology Research Network across the University of Galway, University College Cork, University College Dublin, Trinity College Dublin and University of Limerick and supported by Research Ireland and Health Research Board, is now open for entries for the 2025 cycle.

Fourth, 5th, and 6th class students and their teachers are invited to dive into an exciting, hands-on project: creating their very own randomised trial in the classroom! Using easy-to-follow resources, students will design and run a fun, educational trial that brings science to life. Students can answer any research question they wish and gain a better understanding of scientific methods and teamwork. This is where the scientists of tomorrow take their first steps today!

With a redesigned website now live, teachers and students can explore a comprehensive Resource Page featuring examples of past entries, a step-by-step guide, useful videos, new submission guidelines, and an FAQ section. The site also showcases how the competition supports the primary school curriculum across subjects like Maths, Science, SPHE, and more, making it an engaging and educational experience for children.

Primary School Teachers Feedback:

“This project has changed teaching and learning to real-life experiences.”

“The gain has far outweighed any effort in school.”

“Boosted confidence, given them memories that will last a lifetime and allowed them to reach for the stars.”
